Portals exhibition – viewing slot

Visit this new group exhibition at TOSH, featuring local painters from our Access BEAF Network. Discover work that reflects on identity, belonging, and different approaches to making.

Portals brings together three artists from the Access BEAF Network, following an open call earlier this year. The Access BEAF Network is a supportive group for neurodivergent, disabled and global majority artists in Dorset and Hampshire.

Getting to TOSH

Bike – There are free bike stands outside TOSH available to use
Bus – The M2, 1A, 1B and 1C buses stop at Boscombe bus station (for travel from Christchurch direction) and Centenary Way bus stop (for travel from Bournemouth direction). The walk to TOSH from both stops is less than 5 mins.
Train – Boscombe for Pokesdown train station is a 15 min walk to TOSH. The next closest train station is Bournemouth train station which is a 33 minute walk or a short taxi ride or bus journey to TOSH.
Car – Our free onsite car park consists of 8 spaces, available on a first-come first-served basis. Parking at TOSH is primarily for workshop participants and studio holders. There may at times be available spaces, however we would recommend allowing extra time in case parking is not available onsite. Alternative paid parking can be found at the Sovereign Centre, less than 5 mins walk away.

About the artists

Jaya Edwards is an emerging artist and recent Fine Art graduate whose practice explores themes of identity, belonging and cultural heritage. Drawing from personal experiences of navigating multicultural spaces, her work examines feelings of displacement and the complexities of cultural representation.
Through painting and visual storytelling, she creates intimate narratives that reflect both individual and collective experiences. Jaya’s work is driven by a passion for creative expression and desire to give voice to internal experiences that are often difficult to articulate. By exploring personal and universal themes, she challenges perceptions and invites meaningful conversations around identity, family and connection. Central to her practice is an interest in how cultural traditions, memory and relationships shape a sense of self.
Through emotionally resonant imagery, Jaya aims to create work that allows viewers to feel seen, heard and understood.
Her art seeks to foster empathy, encourage dialogue, and celebrate the diverse experiences that contribute to our understanding of who we are and where we belong.

Rachael Lee is a painter whose work centres on the figure within psychologically charged spaces. Drawing on memory, relationships and lived experience, she creates ambiguous worlds that hover between the familiar, the imagined and somewhere less easily defined.
The paintings invite a slower looking, allowing the viewer to become immersed in spaces that shift between the recognisable and the uncertain. Figures appear exposed, concealed or absorbed within worlds that resist being fully located.
Recent paintings have become increasingly playful with space, as figures and remembered fragments shift and transform through paint.
Rather than offering a fixed narrative, the work leaves space for the viewer to bring their own memories and experiences.

Zsubilla has been living in the UK for over 18 years, she produces art in her Studio at TOSH, Bournemouth, on the South Coast of England.
Her practice is intentionally diverse, embracing a wide range of subject matter, from portraiture and the human figure to landscape, abstraction, and observational studies.
Her recent abstract paintings explore the relationship between memory, atmosphere and emotion through layers of acrylic ink, acrylic paint. They invite the audience into imagined landscapes shaped by colour, movement and light inspired by childhood stories about magical kingdoms. The paintings are intentionally open to interpretation, and encourage people to discover their own connection with the artworks.
Zsubilla attended an online course Mastery Program by Milan Art Institute (2022-2024). Recent group exhibitions include; ‘Easel rider’ and ‘De-fenceless’ in Nolias Gallery, London in 2021, Open up, Nolias Gallery, London, 2022; Graduation group show, Fabriano, Italy, 2024, and a solo exhibition at Liszt Ferenc Institute, London, 2026.
